Tim Vian, Director of Bands at Thurston High School is in his 10th year of leader
ship at THS. Originally from the Salem area Mr. Vian attended the University of Oregon where he earned his
Bachelor's of Music Education and a Bacheor's of Trombone Performance. He was very active in all of the
University ensembles and was a founding member of the
Oregon Green Garter Band. After graduation, Mr. Vian taught at Churchill High School and Jefferson Middle School
where he enjoyed 6 wonderful and successful years with his ensembles. Leaving in 1993 Mr. Vian attended the
University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma where he earned his Master's in Education under the tutelage of the
late Dr. Stephen J. Paul and Dr. William Wakefield. Eagerly returning to Oregon, he attended the
University of Oregon for three years working on his Doctorate in Music Education with a secondary emphasis in
conducting. Mr. Vian enjoyed the position as Teaching assistant to the U of O
Marching Band and
Wind Ensemble where he worked for Dr. Rod Harkins, Mr. Sid Haton, and Mr. Robert Ponto. His duties included directing the
Oregon Campus Band, and the UO BasketBall Band. After finishing his course work Mr. Vian came to Thurston in the Fall of 1997 where he
has enjoyed his tenure very much. Mr. Vian is principal trombonist with the
Eugene Opera and also enjoys racquetball, computers, theology,
reading all sorts of books and spending as much time as possible with his daughter Erica.
Micah Brusse is the percussion instructor for the Thurston Marching Band and Winter Percussion line.
Micah is a former member of the University of Oregon Marching Band and the
Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps, and is a currently the head
percussion instructor for the University of Oregon Drumline. Micah has won numerous awards as a percuusionist
including multiple year Oregon state champion on rudimental and orchestral snare and 3rd place at the Drum Corp
International solo competition. This is Micah's fourth year as the Thurston Percussion instructor and his presence
has definitely make a difference. An awesome percussionist and great teacher.
Alan Keown is a noted percussionist and teacher in the Pacific Northwest. As a performer he has worked with the Smothers Brothers, Suzanne Sommers, Sharri Lewis, the Britt Festival orchestra and numerous symphony orchestras including the renowned Oregon Bach Festival Orchestra. As a drum set artist he has performed in concerts and nightclubs throughout the Northwest, as well as recording studio dates for albums, jingles, and video projects.
He is a frequent consultant to high school and college band programs, and has been involved with Ted Turner's Goodwill Games as well as the competitive tour sponsored by Drum Corps International.
Alan is a clinician for Yamaha Drums, Promark drumsticks and Remo as well as the marching percussion specialist for several Salem, Oregon high schools. He is also the founder of the Alan Keown Marching Percussion Camp, currently held in Oregon. Mr. Keown publishes marching band music with Matrix Publishing Company and concert percussion literature with Alfred Publishing. Alan also teaches indoor drumline shows with marching show concepts.

Sabrina Hindman is the colorguard instructor for the Thurston Marching Band. Sabrina is a former member of the Centennial High School Marching Band and currently a member of the University of Oregon Marching Band. Sabrina is also a senior at the University of Oregon and will be graduating early this december with a B.S in Psychology with a minor in business. This is Sabrina's first year teaching colorguard and is looking forward to a fun and fantastic season.
