ENGLISH 9 Length of class: Year An introductory class in literature, composition and speech. Composition emphasizes sentence, paragraph structure and the five-paragraph essay. ENGLISH 9H Length of class: Year Advanced literature and composition. Students completeing the course will have studied both English 9 and English 10 material. ENGLISH 10 Length of class: Year The study of literature, speech, and composition. Composition skills continue emphasizing the short essay. ENGLISH 10H Length of class: Year Class designed as a world literature survey, beginning with Greek tragedy and ncluding the Middle East, the Middle Agres, the Renaissance, Romanticism, Realism, and modern literature. Emphasis is on the Classics and poetry. Class helps prepare students for AP classes. ENGLISH 11 Length of class: Semester A required class for students to develop basic writing skills in organization, fluency, vocabulary and style. Students will have opportunities to meet state benchmark standards and career related learning standards. CREATIVE WRITING Length of class: Semester Emphasizes techniques of artistic self-expression in written forms such as the short story, poem, and one-act plays. SPEECH WRITING Length of class: Semester A course is specifically designed for juniors and seniors who need additional opportunities to master skills needed to earn a CIM in language arts. Students have opportunities in both the writing and speaking modes to strengthen skills and to meet state benchmark standards. AMERICAN LITERATURE Length of class: Semester Covers American literature from the Puritan through the realism periods (1600-1900). The material focuses on how time periods affect literature. ENGLISH LITERATURE Length of class: Semester Study includes the major periods, authors and titles from Anglos-Saxon times to 1800, Beowulf, Canterbury Tales and selections Adventures in English Literature. FAMILY IN LITERATURE Length of class: Semester Family in Literature is a multi-cultural approach to the theme of family. Novels include: The Education of Little Tree, Black Boy, The Friendly Persuasion, and All Quiet on the Western Front. FILM AS LITERATURE Length of class: Semester A study of the history and influence of film on American society; learning to read and analyze films as if they were literature. HEROES Length of class: Semester A contemporary view of the literary hero as portrayed in poetry, prose and media. The student will develop an understanding of the emergence of the heroic type from a contemporary point of view. MYTHOLOGY Length of class: Semester Course studies world myths that have influenced literature. NOVEL Length of class: Semester A study of the history and development of the novel including discussion of selected novels. Emphasis is on reading for pleasure. OREGON LITERATURE Length of class: Semester Class focuses on literature written by authors from Oregon, Washington, Northern California and Idaho. We explore the concept of a Northwest regional literature, the recurring motifs, characters, themes and landscapes that define the Northwest experience. POETRY AND SHORT STORY Length of class: Semester Course enhances the knowledge and appreciation of poetry and short stroy. Recommended for students planning to attend college or with interest in the poem and short story as a literery form. SCIENCE FICTION Length of class: Semester Provides the oportunity to sample a variety of possibile futures. Study includes the development of the genre and significnt authors, stories and themes that have led to science fiction of today and it's significance for the future. SHAKESPEARE Length of class: Semester Recommended for those wishing to become familiar with Shakespearean plays and characters.Class focuses on elements of tragedy and comedy through the reading of 6-7 plays. Shakespeare's personal history and writing style is also examined. WOMEN IN LITERATURE Length of class: Semester A focus on the images of women presented in short stories, novels, myths and essays by a variety of outstanding female authors. TWENTIETH CENTURY LITERATURE Length of class: Semester Examines themes characterstc of American writing in novels, short stories, poetry, nonfiction and various forms of media by major American authors. This course traces the emergence of the American society through the study of literature. Course intended for college bound students. ADVANCED PLACEMENT (A.P.) LANGUAGE AND COMPOSITION Length of class: Year A college prepatatory reading and writing class emphasizing critical thinking skills through analysis of style and construction, including syntax, word choice, figurative language and logic. Students earn 1/2 credit of writing and 1/2 credit of literature. Students passing the A.P. examination can earn college credit through their selected schools. The test is taken at student expense. (Waivers and fee reductions are available.) ADVANCED PLACEMENT (A.P.) LITERATURE AND COMPOSITION Length of class: Year A college preparatory course combining literatrue and composition. AN in-depth study of poetry works by Shakespeare, tragedy, comedy, and modern literature.Students may receive college credit in literature and composition by successfully comleting A.P. exam at student expense. One-half credit of writing applied toward composition requirement is granted for those who complete the entire year's course.
